Silence

Daily Prompt: Silence

The soundlessness and unfamiliar surroundings of the centuries old house made me feel uneasy as I stood in the kitchen. It was eerily quiet, not even a creak. Old houses should at least creak, right? I had gone downstairs to grab a glass of water.  The predawn light was dim, the stone floor cold beneath my bare feet. I felt a chill. Running the length of my spine, it made the hairs on the back of my neck stand on end. Turning quickly, I swear I could feel someone behind me. There was no one there. I was alone after all; the Lake house was closed for the season and the rest of the team wouldn’t be here until tomorrow. My heart pounding and hands shaking, I moved swiftly to turn on the light.
