Book Review – Wisdom

The Wisdom of Florence Scovel Shinn

I think I was probably in my early 20’s when first introduced to Florence. It was she who would send my on a lifelong search for wisdom, and was the first to make me understand that all I was seeking I would find within.

An American artist and book illustrator Florence became a spiritual teacher and metaphysical writer a little later in life. (This inspires me today) She was truly a woman before her time.

Her publications were:

During her life –

  • The Game of Life and How to Play: 1925
  • Your word is your wand: 1928
  • The Secret Door to Success: 1940

After fer Death –

  • The Power of the Spoken Word: 1945
  • Collected works – FS Shinn The Wisdom of Florence Scovel Shinn, Four Complete books: 1989
  • The Magic Path of intuition: 2013

Purchased in the early 90’s, The complete Works still takes pride of place in the library of books that have changed my life. The pages are dog eared, slightly yellowed and smell like only old books do. A sense of comfort comes from holding it, along with memories of the many times the wisdom in it lifted, healed and calmed me.

My favourite quote? Well there are too many, but this one on page 172 of The Wisdom of Florence Scovel Shinn would be near the top of the list!

Nothing is too good to be true

Nothing is too wonderful to happen

Nothing is too good to last
